“For providers, who often report difficulty with using EHR technology, APIs represent an opportunity for internal innovation. Open APIs can allow provider systems to build their own custom user interfaces in-house or shop around for a better solution than the interface that comes standard with their EHR system. EHRs could eventually become a platform on top of which other companies could build more tailored applications and improve usability for clinicians.“

Although they would probably fit like chalk and cheese if we were ever to draw an actual comparison, but the one common thing that got me thinking was how differently they treat the receivers of their services, i.e., customers and patients respectively.

The digitization of healthcare has been an undeniable and a disruptive force in transforming healthcare. Still, the question remains. There is no doubt that more and more providers are integrating their data, but how can it be put to use? Integrating data is only half the solution, and powerful analytics to generate actionable insights makes up for the other half. However, not just an old EHR will do.
